• Verify Before You Ride: Always confirm the taxi’s registration number and the driver’s name match before getting in.
• Meter is Key: A fair ride always uses the meter. The standard starting fare is 35 baht, then approximately 5 baht per kilometer, with an additional 2 baht per minute in traffic. If a driver asks for a negotiated price, politely decline and find another taxi.
• Avoid Tourist Traps: Taxis lingering in crowded tourist spots sometimes overcharge. Try hailing a taxi that’s currently in motion.
• Stay Connected: Share your location with a friend or family member using your smartphone’s map app for added security.
• Be Prepared: Have small bills readily available for your fare, as drivers may have difficulty making change.
• Communicate Clearly: Knowing how to say your destination in Thai is helpful, or showing the driver a hotel card or the address on your phone is a great alternative.
